poultry farming

In the modern society chicken has become a very popular menu in the parties and functions particularly marriage and birthday parties in the urban areas where the demand for non-vegetarian food and dishes is much pressing. The urban sector has land constraints and, therefore, would be costlier to raise poultry on commercial lines in township although veterinary aid and the availability of medicine is easier.
It is, therefore, important to develop poultry industry in rural areas either in organized or unorganized sector. Rural areas have sufficient land to develop large poultry farms on commercial lines either for eggs or broiler production. There is sufficient labour available in rural areas either from the family source or outside.
With rural electrification, water supply, credit facilities and input availability through the development of appropriate infrastructure poultry farms are not difficult to run. Under the deep litter system there is no difficulty in disposing of the litter as it is a rich source of essential elements (NPK) which is rich in available phosphorus besides nitrogen, potash and bulky organic matter.
There is a lot of scope for running co-operative poultry farms if the farmers become members of such co-operatives as in group farming the availability of inputs would be easier and cheaper. Subsidiary industries in the form of poultry houses, poultry feed, equipment, medicines and raising chicks could be established in rural areas raising the potential for employment.
